SAILING
Magazine's
Value Guide
(5-sailboat rating system)

PRICE: Cruising catamarans are not cheap. However, some are definitely better values than others, and the Privilege 39 is a quality boat at a fair price.

DESIGN QUALITY: There is nothing revolutionary or even extraordinary about he 39’s design, however, it is well proven on the oceans and charter bases of the world.

CONSTRUCTION QUALITY: From excellent fiberglass work to fine woodworking, by catamaran standards, the 39 is a well-built boat.

USER-
FRIENDLINESS: The aft helm station has positives and negatives. The visibility is good, the instrument panel is good but the exposure is not. The four-cabin interior maximizes the extra space provided by the large bridgedeck..

SAFETY: This is where the Privilege 39 shines. The solid construction, well-supported rig, large bridgedeck and easy to navigate deck add up to a safe boat.

TYPICAL CONDITION: Ex-charter boats drag this rating down. The truth is: chartering is hard on boats, even boats with full-time crews.

REFITTING: Unlike many charter boats that are constructed entirely from molded tools, there is decent access to most parts of the 39. There is also a track record of turning former charter boats into family cruisers.

SUPPORT: Although the company is still in business, there isn’t much support here in the United States. There is not an active owner’s association and you need to speak French to make sense of the Web site. Christine Buttigieg is a good source of information. You can reach her at
www.catamarans.com or at (954) 727-0016.

AVAILABILITY: There is always a good supply of 39s on the market. The best selection is always in Florida and the Caribbean. If you are serious about a 39 it’s worth your while to make a trip to the islands. Chartering is also a good way to see if you want to invest in a 39.

INVESTMENT AND RESALE: Privileges are in general more expensive than some of their peers, but they are also quality boats that hold their value. Most of the depreciation has been wrung out of the 39.
