(5-sailboat rating system)

PRICE: This is an expensive boat. But like a Volvo or a Saab, you pay for quality. I suspect that even if you buy a 15-year-old 34, you will be able to keep it for a lifetime.

DESIGN QUALITY: This Frers design is all about versatility. Some may consider that too much of a compromise, I consider it a virtue and the hallmark of a good design.

CONSTRUCTION QUALITY: This is one of the best-constructed boats we’ve featured in the Used Boat Notebook, with solid and intelligent engineering.

USER-
FRIENDLINESS: A well-protected cockpit with all sail controls led aft and a safe, friendly deck make handling the boat a pleasure. The interior is well done given the available space.

SAFETY: Good construction and safety are always linked. The 34 includes plenty of handrails, built-in harness attachment points and other features that need to be added to most other used boats.

TYPICAL CONDITION: Most used HR 34s are in good to excellent condition. This is mostly due to the original quality that was put into them but also because typical owners have the resources to keep them up.

REFITTING: Not always an easy boat to work on. Although liners are kept to a minimum the ample use of wood makes accessing some areas challenging. Also, if you do decide to launch into a project you better do a good job or it will be obvious it’s a DIY job.

SUPPORT: The HR Web site, www.hallberg-rassy.se, is good, and the owner network is also well organized. However, the fact that the factory is in Sweden, and most boats are in Europe, doesn’t lend itself to easy support.

AVAILABILITY: Although there were plenty of 34s built, most are in Europe. There are always some 34s for sale in North America, although it’s more likely to find them on the East Coast or Pacific Northwest.

INVESTMENT AND RESALE: Hallberg-Rassys hold their value better than most boats but the initial investment required is steep.
