New boat: Etap 28s

By now, most sailors know that Etap’s claim to fame is that its boats are unsinkable. But made with a double-skinned hull of fiberglass-reinforced polyester, the Etap 28s offers much more than just safety.

The 28s has European styling and a speedy look to it. The nearly plumb bow and rounded cabinhouse visually lengthens the boat and the rounded transom has a sleek look to it and folds out to be a bathing platform with a ladder. The 7/8ths single-spreader rig is deck-stepped for added watertightness down below. The large mainsail is made easier to manage with lazy jacks and the jib is self-tacking.

Down below, the Stile Bertone-designed interior, which is available in a variety of layouts, belies the boat’s length. Light oak laminate and gray and brown floor panels are used throughout, making for a light and airy space. A panoramic window across the front of the cabinhouse allows in additional light, as do a number of portholes. The rounded styling of the deck is continued down below where rounded corners make for comfortable spaces. Several configurations are available, but one of the most interesting features a V-berth with part of the forward bulkhead removed to extend the sleeping area onto the starboard settee. A roomy aft cabin layout is also available.

In any layout, the head is to starboard of the companionway and the galley is to port. A two-burner stove and oven is standard as is a countertop icebox. A small chart table—uncommon in many boats this size—is also located to starboard as is the electronic panel.

A number of options are available to further customize the boat. Owners can choose the Etap vertical steering system over the standard tiller steering as well as a tandem keel option that features two short keels spaced behind one another and joined together by a wing-bulb to provide better lift and increased stability. A heater, holding tank and refrigeration system are also options.
