After years of working on various boat projects in different countries around the world, designer Andy Pitt wanted a boat that could be easily and cheaply transported in a shipping container. What he came up with was a classic-inspired sloop with an LOA of 36 feet, beam of 7 feet, 8 inches and a mast a hair under 40 feet, all which fits inside a 40-foot container “with a prayer and some washing-up liquid,” says Pitt. In the container, the boat can be stored or shipped worldwide.
Pitt based the design of the new Doubloon 36 on the classic 8-meters of the 1920s, but the boat also pays tribute to classic Scandinavian yachts, which were traditionally low and narrow with a high sail area. Meant for coastal, inland and lake sailing, the 36 is designed for fast weekend cruising or club racing. While its long overhangs and traditional-looking topsides give the boat its classic good looks, a modern underbelly gives it a competitive edge.
The Doubloon 36 can be rigged either as a masthead sloop or fractional rig and all sheets, lines and halyards are led to the protected cockpit for simple solo or shorthanded sailing. The 36 offers the choice of either a standard low-draft bulb keel or deep-draft fin keel. Both the bolted keel and rudder can be removed for shipping. Down below, the saloon features a cherry wood table flanked by opposing settees that double as berths. A small galley is just to port of the companionway with the nav station to starboard. Forward is a double berth stateroom with enclosed head and locker.
The 36 is being built by Concordia Yachting Ltd. of Thailand in hand-laid-up GRP with a teak deck and teak inlaid cockpit seats.
