New boat: Sun Odyssey 36i

We just returned from the Chicago Strictly Sail boat show, held the first week of February. One of the boats that caught our eye was the new Sun Odyssey 36i from Jeanneau. This Marc Lombard design looks like it should be as competitive mixing it up with the PHRF fleet as it is fun sailing off for a week of adventure.

One of the nice things about out-of-water boat shows like the Chicago Show is the chance to see the boats from all angles—top to bottom. The 36i shows nice lines all around. Below the waterline the boat looks like it’ll cleave the water just fine, with a sleek hull form, 6-foot, 4-inch fin keel with trailing bulb and a spade rudder.

On deck the boat has a wide cockpit that, while not very long, is comfortable and easy to move around in. Teak side decks with a nice teak handhold that runs along the cabintop edge will make going forward less nerve-racking. The traveler sits forward of the companionway and lines are led to clutches on the cabintop adjacent to the companionway. Ideally, the clutches would sit farther aft at the bulkhead, but Jeanneau has placed hatches on these spots instead. A fractional rig with an overlapping headsail holds 686 square feet of sail for a respectable SA/D of 20.31. Also available is a performance model with 743 square feet of sail, which will up the SA/D to 22.

Going down below feels like stepping into a 42-footer. A large galley is to starboard, with access to a quarterberth cabin aft, while an equally spacious head with shower stall is to port. A U-shaped settee wraps around the saloon table, and opposite is a settee bench with plenty of room for two and a full nav desk aft of this. Forward is V-berth. This is the perfect layout for two couples or a family. If taking on a larger crew, however, a three-cabin layout is also available.
